What is Traditional Chinese Medicine?

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is the one of the oldest continuously practiced professional medicine in the world,

tracing back more than 2,000 years.Used to restore health and treat disease, TCM is now the second largest medical system in the world and it is currently used by one third of the world’s population.

Even though the common diseases of 2,000 years ago are quite different from those that are common now, TCM still is able to effectively treat ailments of today. This is the beauty of the TCM system. TCM is a holistic medicine that considers the “whole” person: body, mind, diet, environment, emotions, lifestyle, and exercise. TCM then applies treatment according to differentiating syndromes and individualization. In addition, the occurrence of disease in TCM is caused by various types of pathogenic factors and disharmonies of the body, so the treatment not only focuses on the symptoms (branches) but also works on the causes (roots). TCM treatments include Acupuncture, Moxibustion, Cupping, Tuina massage, Herbs, Exercises and Diet.

What can Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) offer?

Though best known in western cultures for treating various types of pain, TCM and acupuncture treat a wide variety of symptoms and illnesses.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified specific conditions that have been proven particularly effective with TCM and acupuncture: postoperative pain, nausea and vomiting, dental pain, anxiety, panic disorders and insomnia. Furthermore, TCM and acupuncture have been shown to be successful in treating conditions of gynecology, gastroenterology, neurology, low back pain, arthritis, injuries and musculo-skeletal disorders, headaches & migraines, stress, addictions, immune system disorders, respiratory system disorders, depression, and allergies. This is not an exclusive list by any means, but it does offer some indications. TCM can also be used to maintain optimal health in the absence of illness.
